Q&A with K&M // Pittsburgh Children's Photographer

These are such strange, uncertain times. Like you probably have been, I’ve been adjusting to my “new normal” and doing a great deal of reflection (as well as a great deal of spring cleaning and snacking!). While there have been some novel up-sides, like basically never putting on real pants, there is mostly just an eerie sense of absence and a nostalgia for the not-distant-at-all past. I miss photography. I miss the kids and families that I work with. I miss hugs and high-fives and Jojo Siwa dance parties at the studio. I am doing my best to stay connected with everyone. That sense of connection despite physical distance is what will maintain our sense of humanity and community. If you’d like to join my little community, we have a VIP Facebook Group. I’ve been posting games and other activities and just generally keeping in touch that way. We’d love to have you join us!

One of the things that The Great Pause has given me the time to do is catch up on my blogging. When people look back at whatever my legacy may be, they are never gonna say, “She was always so on top of her blogging!” Profuse apologies for that! ;)

After talking with their mama, I was so excited to meet and photograph Kaiton, almost 3 years old at the time, and his baby brother Milan, 5 months old, for so many reasons. First off, look at these two - how gorgeous are these boys?! I love getting to photograph kiddos with warm complexions like this, and I decided to use a white backdrop for the session so that all of that beautiful melanin would really shine and pop. Kaiton is such a genuinely sweet-natured, gentle child. He will absolutely talk your ear off, but it’ll be in such a quiet tone that you need to listen closely so that you don’t miss any of his important questions; he’s incredibly inquisitive and perceptive and mature for his age, and they ARE important questions. Milan is the smiliest little dude. I don’t often photograph babies as young as he was, so I was admittedly a bit nervous. (As much of a wildcard as kids can be in the studio, babies are even more so.) Boy, did I feel silly afterwards, because Milan was so happy and effervescent and patient with us. One of the things that I love most about this family is their commitment to encouraging and celebrating their kids’ authentic selves. We all know that’s my number one goal and reason for doing what I do, and hearing mama speak on the subject was heartwarming and took all of my words right out of my mouth. I seriously cannot wait to photograph these two again, if for no other reason than to have the opportunity to sit in their living room for a bit and let Kaiton further educate me on lawnmowers and vacuum cleaners and other devices of the noisy variety that pique his interest.

Marco's Like a Rainbow // Pittsburgh Children's Photographer

Working with Baby Marco and his mama was such a wonderful, special experience. Mama has a chic bohemian style and a great artistic sensibility, and is a self-described “big fan of the rainbow.” Marco loves bold colors and is fascinated by the movement of light and shadows. I wanted to combine all of these things in a way that would honor both of them, while also creating unique wall art for their (perfectly) eclectic home decor. I always deeply appreciate when my clients trust my vision, particularly when I am doing something more outside of the box. For most of the session, I used colored lighting to create a lovely rainbow of shadows that kept Marco engaged and photographed beautifully. I toned the images to appear a bit on the warmer/vintage side in keeping with a more bohemian feel. Marco was a joy to photograph - pleasant and smiling the entire time and popping into these tiny poses that looked as if he was actually modeling, posing, and aware that these images will be around for posterity in the future, so he had better ham it up. (His reclined pose in the second to last image in this blog absolutely kills me.) Can’t wait to watch this tiny one grow and work with this family again in the future!

Viva La Vida // Pittsburgh Children's Photographer

Vida, now 3-years old, is one of the cutest little girls that I’ve ever seen in real life. From her sparkling blue eyes to her gorgeous mop of curls, she is like a living doll. (And, she certainly photographs like one, as well!) Vida loves all things girly like playing dress-up and glitter, and has the most adorable affinity for Lady Gaga. We seriously got the best smiles out of her for her close-up portraits by just yelling “LADY GAGA!” over and over together. When we met, Vida was just beginning her foray into modeling, so we scheduled her a Comp Card Session to get her set up for success. In the brief time between our session and now, this little one has been BUSY BUSY BUSY. She’s already been featured in multiple magazines, including with my images in Madison Magazine’s July issue. I’m so excited to follow along with her journey and continue to photograph her as she grows up. One last little anecdote before I wrap this one up: When I arrived at Vida’s house to deliver her printed comp cards and stunning acrylic block, she proudly answered the door wearing these gorgeous bejeweled kitten-heeled shoes. They were a purchase for Halloween, but Miss Vida needed to fabulously strut around in these, her first pair of heeled shoes, immediately, just because. And, that’s just how fabulous and hilarious and sparkly Vida is every day.

The Muppet Show, Starring... Koraleigh! // Pittsburgh Children's Photographer

One of the best parts of being a photographer is really getting to know the families that I work with, building a relationship with them, and watching the kiddos grow up and the families grow in number. I had the honor of photographing Kellan for his first birthday last year, and now, it was his little sister, Koraleigh’s turn for her 1-year portrait session.

This Mama comes up with the MOST FUN birthday party themes that really get my creative juices flowing. When she told me that Kora’s party theme was going to be classic 70s Muppet Show, I was over the moon and instantly started brainstorming as to how to incorporate that in a modern, sophisticated way. The first thing that came to my mind was the “Mahna Mahna” song and The Snowths, so I decided to make them out of paper and put the baby right in between them to recreate the skit. And, of course, the most iconic imagery from The Muppet Show is Kermit doing his opening monologue on stage, in front of the luxe, red curtain. I snagged some gorgeous velvet fabric to make a tiny version for Kora to sit in front of, and we put her in fuzzy, green pants. (I shifted the color of them to be more “Kermit green” while retouching the images.) It was as if she knew her role, and while I was photographing this set, she kept doing her “SO BIG” arms, and it looked like she was most definitely hosting the show and excitedly introducing a guest.

I’m so grateful for the relationship that I’ve built with this family, and I cannot wait for the next party theme and creative challenge!!!

Orange You Glad? // Pittsburgh Family Photographer

I looove donating portrait packages to various charitable auctions around the city! Not only does it help raise money for a myriad of amazing causes, but it enables me to meet and photograph wonderful families that I might not otherwise have had the opportunity to meet. This family came to me courtesy of my donation to The Imani Gala, an annual fundraiser held on behalf of Imani Christian Academy. You can read more about it here.

The main goal of our portrait session was to capture a few adorable images for baby Abigail’s first birthday. We decided to also create some images of the whole family together, as well as some of just the kiddos, including Sebastian, 4 1/2-years old, and Marcella, 2 1/2-years old. Dad also really wanted to capture a solo image with the babe, and it ended up being one of my favorites from the day. Right before taking a “smiley” image, Dad kissed her on the cheek as I hurriedly snapped away. It was such a beautiful little unplanned moment, and went hand-in-hand with Mom wanting a more natural feel to the session.

The decor in their home is mostly earth-toned with some gorgeous pops of color here and there. To match this, I opted to photograph the session on an off-white backdrop, but I still wanted to have some pops of color, as well. Mom delivered me my dream “color pop” when she showed me Abigail’s birthday dress for her party: a beautiful, vibrant orange number with lovely detailing. When choosing the rest of the family’s wardrobe for the session, we pulled colors from that detailing to tie everything together. Mom knew that she had a stunning green dress to coordinate with the green accents, and we outfitted the rest of the crew in tones of navy and white. I think that Sebastian’s green shoelaces were my favorite subtle detail.

I’m SO pleased with how these images turned out, and loved every minute spent with this family.

Over the Rainbow with Gianna + Arianna + Isabella // Pittsburgh Children's Photographer

I am so incredibly fortunate that I get to work with kiddos as precious and loving as Gianna, Arianna, and Isabella. From the moment I walked into their house for their consultation, these little ones made me feel like I was their new best friend, and I couldn't get enough of their personalities or their hugs (my favorite!). Gianna, 7, was a miniature professional. She spent the whole session popping into her own poses and making us laugh hysterically. She's a spitfire and a comedian. Arianna, while on the shy side, is incredibly sweet. She is thoughtful, considerate, and, dare I say, "detail-oriented" at 6 years old? (She insisted that we be able to see her beautiful pink shoes in her images, and adjusted her dress accordingly.) Isabella, the baby of the family at 3 years old, is the most affectionate, snuggly little lady, with a twinkle in her eye and just a touch of mischievousness.

On my "getting to know you" questionnaire, every client chooses three words that they would like to describe their finished images. After reading mom's selections of "artistic, whimsical, and colorful," and seeing the colorful decor in their home, I knew that this would be the PERFECT session to bring to life my vision of a super vibrant rain + rainbow-themed spring session. Of course, I enlisted my good friends at Airheads Balloon Art to work their magic and create this seriously awe-inspiring 7-foot balloon rainbow. It made for such a magical day for both the girls and myself!

A portrait session at POSE PGH is all about creating statement pieces and works of art for your home. Check out this gorgeous image wall that the girls' mama created with her prints! (She was kind enough to send me a snapshot.) The white frames perfectly offset the rich, luster prints and the darker brick wall. I am so pleased to see it all come together so beautifully, from a vision in my head all the way to cherished artwork.

K is for Kellan // Pittsburgh Children's Photographer

I LOVE when I get to photograph the littlest of the little, and Kellan's one-year session was no exception! Sir Kellan was having a classic Disney Robin Hood-themed first birthday shindig, so we planned out some imagery and props that would match the theme and could be displayed at his party. (Mom made and styled the props, and did such a wonderful job!) I love the aesthetic of photographing white-on-white, and I knew that doing so would really emphasize his beautiful brown eyes and adorable little rolls. Then, when we added in the more colorful wardrobe and props, it really made everything *POP*.

It's funny how a child's unique personality shines through, even at such a young age. Kellan is very serious little man, but I did manage to capture some smiles and giggles, too. (He definitely has his "Blue Steel" face perfected, though. Watch out, ladies!) And, like most almost-one-year-olds, everythinggg goes into the mouth for a trial run, including the lovely, and apparently delicious, orange "K" prop Mom picked up for the session. It couldn't have gotten any cuter!

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (Naina + Mina) // Pittsburgh Children's Photographer

When I had the opportunity to photograph little ladies as fun and spunky as Naina and Mina, it reminded me precisely why I chose to be a children's photographer. By the time we were finished, my cheeks hurt a bit from smiling for so long, and I felt energized by the amount of tiny giggles that had bounced around in the air at the studio that day (seriously - it's like filling up my gas tank).

Naina is creative, artistic 9-year old with a huge imagination and sweet disposition. Mina, 7 years old, is an entertainer: outgoing, playful, and in Mom's words, "just a ham in general." I knew that I had to give these ladies an Editorial Session to match their vibrant, spirited personalities, and was overjoyed when Mom chose the word "colorful" as one of her three words to describe her ideal session. There was only one option, really. We NEEDED to throw a PAR-TAY - a big, colorful one. And, what party is complete without decorations?! To help decorate for Naina and Mina's party, I enlisted the help of Leigh-Anne from Airheads Balloon Art, who made the most ahhh-mazing balloon doggies to tie everything together and really bring my creative vision to life. (If you'd like to step up your decoration game for your kiddo's birthday party, or any other event in the future, definitely get in touch with them - they are spectacular to work with!) Last but not least, what party is complete without glitter? EVERYTHING is better with glitter.

SO MUCH FUN in the studio with Naina + Mina this morning. Everything is better with glitter! ✨
